Team BushCo doesn't only want to codify torture to prove that we can torture. They want this torture policy, born during "wartime," to become domestic policy as soon as possible. It won't happen tomorrow or even by 2008 but it will happen and with electronic voting entrenched and the virtualization of our democracy gaining greater ground every day, there won't be any peaceful way to stop them.
These people think strategically, long term and according to a loop that runs constantly in their fucking evil heads. But their biggest asset is the complete lack of opposition from any quarter of the country. Mark my words, if the gutting of the War Crimes Act goes down as Digby suggests and I think it will - s/he's absolutely right about the Graham, Warner, McCain protests being nothing more than kabuki - the next step is to codify the torture of American citizens in the name of all that's Holy.
