The tagline is brilliant - and legitimate. How do opponents of the bi-partisan, compromise SCHIP bill sleep at night?
If you're keeping track of the reasons the bad guys are giving to oppose the bi-partisan, compromise SCHIP reauthorization, so far we've had: it's not too expensive but we don't want to cover thieving, undeserving middle class kids before we cover low-income kids, it's too expensive AND we don't want to cover thieving, undeserving middle class kids, it lets thieving, undeserving illegals get coverage for their kids, it covers thieving, undeserving adults, it relies on a tax increase (on tobacco) for funding. All of those silly excuses have been debunked but the GOP is standing by Dear Leader. I have to say that I'm envious of their solidarity.
The good news is that politically at least time is on our side. If the Dems can hang strong (as usual, a big if) then they can wait to reintroduce the bill just before the '08 elections making it very hard for the House Republans to stand by their man. So the bill will be passed. The bad news is that every day the bill isn't passed, children are losing their health care. It is literally a crying shame that those families - many of whom are SCHIP beneficiaries and potential SCHIP beneficiaries - are suffering this sort of unnecessary stress. If you've ever faced a health insurance crisis, as I have, then you know that this is the sort of crisis that can do genuine harm to a family's mental health, compounding any other health problems family members are facing.
The country is facing a health care crisis of historic proportions. The bi-partisan, compromise SCHIP reauthorization legislation is a small step in the direction of helping lower middle class survive it at least as far as their children are concerned. It's obvious that BushCo is holding these families hostage in order to advance his Kill the Poor and Middle Class agenda as well as to further his quest to remain relevant through the merciful end of his tragic term of office. Right now he's getting away with it. It's up to the Dems to be sure the plan backfires and, sadly, up to the people who will have to endure the wait for SCHIP to be reauthorized to find a way to survive.
Call your Congressperson today and tell him/her that you want the current bi-paritisan, compromise SCHIP bill passed unchanged.
