OK, so there's not much question that the Catholic Church is currently in the hands of the kind of Pope the Borgias would have understood and approved. Is there likewise any question that the church Ratzinger runs is a hierarchy with a top-down political structure similar to the Mafia's?
Phoenix's Bishop Tom Olmsted doesn't think so. He is clearly aware what stance he'd better take on issues if he wants to get the attention of the Don and make his way up the ladder in the Family. This week he excommunicated a nun charged with administering a Catholic hospital. Was she stealing money? Holding Satanic rites in the operating rooms? No. She OK'ed an abortion in order to save the life of a pregnant woman who was critically ill.
"He's very, very much on policy," Hemberger said of Olmsted. "Whatever issue would come up he'd say, 'What's our policy on that?' He's a very policy-oriented kind of a person. His idea behind that is that he wanted to be consistent."
"Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" according to Emerson. If that's true - and it probably is - Olmsted can lay claim to one of the smallest.
Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted has been described as "a company man" when it comes to orthodoxy. As if to live up to this reputation he has denied Communion to a ten year-old autistic boy unable to swallow; fired the diocese's nationally-recognized head of Office of Child and Youth Protection because she was married in a civil ceremony; and when President Obama issued the executive order rescinding the previous administration's onerous restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, he declared: "What President Obama is doing is forcing all American taxpayers to pay for this homicidal research."
What a guy! Himmler would have loved him and Ratzinger will no doubt promote him. He is, after all, the picture of the New Benedictine Catholic: obedient, mean, and stupid. More importantly, he knows how to suck up to his superiors. He isn't concerned about the fact that if Sr Margaret had done things his way she would have been guilty of murder, killing a living woman while trying to save a non-viable fetus that wouldn't have lived anyway. He is only concerned, along with Himmler's concentration camp bureaucrats, that New Benedictine policies be followed to the letter, without thought, without discussion, without exception, no matter how crazy, morally bankrupt or even inhuman it would be to do so.
The New Benedictine Catholic Church prefers automatons, zero-tolerance, and dead women to violated policies no matter how antique, thoughtless, or cruel those policies may be.
One of many reasons I am no longer and never will be again a Catholic.
