They didn't 'give' him so much time. He took it. He was only scheduled to speak for 7 mins. He spoke for, what? 23 mins? Threw them all off their timing, he did, and everybody was worried about if they were going to be able to get Edwards on by 10p because Al strayed from the script.

I wish Obama had had the balls to do that, too.

The NYT called the Sharpton speech the best act of civil disobedience at the convention for shanghai-ing the extra time. I agree. It's such a hard call about Obama for me though. There's a lot to be said for playing by the rules. No matter what Sharpton does, he's cast as a clown, which is a shame. Of course, his choices haven't always been the best. The challenge for Obama will be to be able to grow into a serious activist - if he even wants that role. Right now, the Dems are busy getting white America to like him. I was encouraged by the flashes of activism I heard from him though.

Obama doesn't have to worry about comparisons with Sharpton--there's no Tawana Brawlee in his past. But he does have to worry about becoming the DLC's pet houseboy. I agree that last night was a tough call; I would have been happier if he'd realized his position and moved early to take advantage of it, but it isn't fair to expect it of him at this stage.

However, the die is now cast. He's a superstar-in-waiting and everybody knows it. What he does from here on out can be fairly judged. Pelosi's every instinct is anti-DLC; she got her position after the DLC's mid-term strategy lost them the House, and then proceeded to do the exact opposite of everything they recommended she do. She's now a power as a result.

The DLC is death for the Dems. Pelosi already knows it, Obama has to figure it out--quick--and decide which way he's going to go. He could be the first black Pres, but not if he listens to them.

  • "[O]ur time, our energy, should be spent in educating, agitating, organizing our fellow citizens in the workplace, in the neighborhood, in the schools. Our objective should be to build, painstakingly, patiently but energetically, a movement that, when it reaches a certain critical mass, would shake whoever is in the White House, in Congress, into changing national policy on matters of war and social justice."

  • "True religion will not let us fall asleep in the comfort of our freedom. Love thy neighbor is not a piece of advice, it's a command. ...

God, my friends, is with the poor and God is with us, if we are with them. This is not a burden, this is an adventure."

The Reverend Al Sharpton

Mr. President, we love America, not because of all of us have seen the beauty all the time.

But we believed if we kept on working, if we kept on marching, if we kept on voting, if we kept on believing, we would make America beautiful for everybody.
