Atrios has it right on the Medicare trojan horse, designed and implemented to further discredit government, while enriching the people who line Congress' pockets:
If I were the Democratic version of Grover Norquist, tasked with sending out their weekly telepathic talking points, every single Democrat would be fanning out throughout the land over the next couple of weeks demanding emergency legislation to overhaul the program and fix its problems. Town Halls with seniors, video with weeping granny unable to get her drugs from the local pharmacy, etc...
And yet, there is silence. Wouldn't want to appear too partisan or negative or objectively anti-government. That last one is a legitimage concern. In order to tear this boondoggle apart without falling into the GOP trap to discredit all government social programs, Dems would have to turn their guns directly at BushCo's incompetence and his cronyism. Nothing I've seen in five years indicates that they have the stomach for that. Wouldn't want to risk being tarred with the same brush or be accused of being anti-business or anti-life-saving medicine ...
