I dunno. This:

the Senate Select Committee was created, where Kerry and McCain ultimately worked together to bury evidence

does not accord with anything else I think I know about Sen. John Kerry.

Less than 2500 men were ultimately unaccounted for in Vietnam, an astoundingly small number compared to previous wars, and especially considering the nature of the Vietnam battlefield. The article in The Nation seems to claim that about half of that total were POWs purposely held as a bargaining chip by the North and cynically abandoned by Nixon.

I guess I need to reserve judgement until I learn more. Up to this date, I had considered H. Bruce Franklin's 1997 article in The Atlantic Monthly to be a reliable summary, and the account in The Nation strongly conflicts.

This is a smear, not just of John McCain its intended target but of Presidents Carter and Clinton, a number of military officers and congressmen, and others who are being maligned for not proving a negative. This is throw it against the wall and see if it sticks "reporting." The timing of this article clues you in on just how desperately Sidney Schanberg wants a byline these days.

  • "[O]ur time, our energy, should be spent in educating, agitating, organizing our fellow citizens in the workplace, in the neighborhood, in the schools. Our objective should be to build, painstakingly, patiently but energetically, a movement that, when it reaches a certain critical mass, would shake whoever is in the White House, in Congress, into changing national policy on matters of war and social justice."

Mr. President, we love America, not because of all of us have seen the beauty all the time.

But we believed if we kept on working, if we kept on marching, if we kept on voting, if we kept on believing, we would make America beautiful for everybody.

  • ''With adequate profit, capital is very bold. A certain 10 percent will ensure its employment anywhere; 20 percent will produce eagerness, 50 percent positive audacity; 100 percent will make it ready to trample on all human laws; 300 percent, and there is not a crime which it will not scruple, nor a risk it will not run, even to the chance of its owner being hanged.''
